Let’s be honest: the drainage industry can be a confusing place.
It’s full of technical jargon, confusing (and often conflicting) advice, and when a problem hits—a blocked toilet, a gurgling sink, a soggy garden—it’s stressful. You’ve got water backing up, you don’t know who to call, and you’re worried about being misunderstood or overcharged.
I’ve Seen the Best… And the Worst
I’ve been a drainage engineer in the UK for over 20 years.
I’ve dealt with the simplest of blockages taking all of two minutes to unblock to the most complex of challenges involving taking apart main waste pipes inside hospital therapy rooms at 3am in the morning.
In that time, as I say in our mission statement, “I’ve seen the best and the worst of the industry.”
The “best” is brilliant, highly-skilled engineering. It’s professionals using incredible technology to solve complex problems without digging up your garden.
Half the time the best engineers are succeeding mainly due to their mindset and want to give the best customer service.
The “worst,” unfortunately, is far too common. It’s confusing jargon used to make a simple job sound complicated. It’s a lack of clear information. It’s homeowners and businesses not knowing their rights or responsibilities, like the difference between a private drain and a public sewer.
And then there are the companies and engineers who are in it just to focus on the money they can get from unsuspecting customers.
Our Mission: To Make Drains Make Sense
This is why DrainsandSewers.co.uk exists.
Our mission is simple: to be the most dedicated, clear, and accessible resource for the UK drainage industry.
We’re here to give you “the full picture,” which means:
- No More Jargon: We explain things in plain English. We’ll tell you what a “Buchan Trap” or a “B125 rating” actually means for you.
- Honest, Practical Advice: We will give you the same advice we’d give a family member over a cup of tea. That includes straightforward DIY tips that work, and, just as importantly, when to put the drain rods away and call a professional.
- Authority You Can Trust: All our guides are written from a foundation of decades of hands-on, UK-based experience. This isn’t theory; it’s practical knowledge from being out on the van, on-site, and in the trenches.
